City council needs to get its act together
Tom Aspell recently announced that he was taking a sabbatical for six weeks. I suspect that he is thinking of retiring in the near future. I believe that he is being pushed into a decision like this, because of a city council which seems to have lost its mind. The council has gotten bogged down in petty grievances and issues which have resulted in public infighting at meetings, petty politics,and seemingly endless review of issues already settled. Members of council have also made baseless charges against each other, and in some cases appear to have attempted to take control of management of the city from the responsible departments.
The result has been a confused and unintelligible approach to governing. If these issues continue and ultimately drive Tom or others to leave or retire, it will not be easy to replace them. Very few managers will want to endure a situation such as we have now. The lack of comity that the city is now confronted with in its council meetings is impacting the entire reputation of Concord.
Our city council needs to get its act together, and soon.
