You’ve got to be kidding
Dan Innis’s My Turn piece in the July 22 Monitor made me gasp. He is actually trying to blame Democrats for your high property taxes. Really!
The fact of the matter is that Mr. Innis and his Free State/ Liberty Alliance legislators have over the past decade eliminated various forms of state revenues — for example interest and dividend taxes on the wealthy 1% and a vast variety of revenue sources required to run the state’s services including support for public education. And then there is the diversion of funds to fund private school education through the voucher program, further sapping funds from public schools at local taxpayers’ expense. As a result of this legislation support for local school districts has been cut substantially.
And guess what? All of this eliminated or diverted support for public education has resulted in down-shifting of special education and general school costs onto local municipal tax payers thus raising real estate taxes to cover the deficits.
To blame Democrats for the increase in local taxes is patently false and mean spirited.
When you vote this year and in the future, keep this false narrative in mind and beware of Free Staters pretending to be main stream Republicans.
Sooner or later the real truth about local tax increases will become obvious to all regardless of the kind of propaganda dished out by Mr. Innis and his Free State/Libertarian comrades.
Vote your pocket book in September and again in November.
