Our national forests need a voice
They are “the People’s Forests” and they are in danger. The proposed budget cuts millions and eliminates forest research that has gone on for decades; that research supports timbermen and the local economy. After cuts, the USDA turns around and spends what is left on “reorganizing” forestry work, setting up centers far from New Hampshire. \
U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz has not spoken to Congress in favor of keeping the Service fully funded and is proceeding with this reorganization that has not been brought to the people. We know how other efforts to reorganize the public good have been harmful and wasteful. Write to the director at tom.schultz@usda.gov and tell him to stop the reorganization and keep the Service fully funded. Speak to Gov. Kelly Ayotte and representatives in Concord, who have been oddly quiet.
Our forests are as American as apple pie, and irreplaceable. We are not used to having to remind the government of its duties, but now we have to. Demand that we keep funding for New Hampshire forests, including experimental forest research. When voters are loud enough, the government drops harmful changes.
