Keep local elections apolitical
The topic of rising property taxes stirs strong responses, as we’ve seen in the letters to the editor following Senator Dan Innis’s column in the July 22 Monitor. Others have addressed his misleading comments that blame Democrats for the problem.
The issue I want to address is his underlying attempt to politicize local elections and budget struggles. As New Hampshire citizens who participate directly in town and school governance, we vote for community members whom we think are capable of and dedicated to doing what’s best for our communities and our students. There are no D’s or R’s next to their names when we vote for them. In Webster and other rural towns in Senator Innis’s district, candidates for local office don’t campaign by party the way candidates for state or federal offices do.
Local select board and school board members are our neighbors and members of our community who volunteer to do public service on our behalf. If we don’t agree with their actions while in office, we vote them out!
Let’s keep our local elections apolitical. And on the state level, let’s vote out politicians like Dan Innis.
