If I had to pick a singular favorite form of transportation, it would be trains. There’s something incredibly enchanting about sitting in a railroad car, chugging along the tracks while the world slides by outside.
Maybe it’s all my daydreams of the Hogwarts Express or the allure of grandeur from centuries past, but when I set foot on a train, amid the steam and rush of passengers, part of me always feels like I’m stepping back through time.
We also live in a world where everything is hurried. We’re always hustling to get to the next place, scroll to the next reel flashing across our phones, accomplish the next item on our to-do list, be as productive as possible in as short a time as we can. But trains remind us to slow down. To breathe. To observe the world. To just exist for a little while without the hubbub of our 21st-century life.
This weekend, trains are taking over Concord! Well, to be more precise, the Everett Arena will be filled with model trains. Concord Model Railroad Club is hosting its 40th annual Model Railroad Show on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. There will be over five dozen dealers with prizes, food and more. Tickets cost $2 for adults, but people under age 15 can enter for free with an adult.
Last weekend, I mentioned the Sunflower Bloom Festival at Sunfox Farm. This week, I want to share more about Brookford Farm’s Sunflower Soiree. Running through Sunday, the Canterbury farm aims to celebrate summer with pick-your-own sunflowers, live music, fun food, hay rides, cow parades, children’s activities and far more. Head to the farm between now and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. to enjoy the festivities.
For other weekend enjoyment, check out the NH Center for Photography’s Third Annual FotoFest, happening on Saturday at Kimball Jenkins School of Art in Concord.
“Come hang out with your fellow NH photographers, talk shop and browse the market for film and digital cameras, lenses, darkroom equipment, studio lighting, expired film, assorted gear and Photographic Art,” the event description reads. Stop by from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. to experience FotoFest!
And if you’re looking for a relaxing way to end your weekend, grab your picnic blanket and go to Music on the Green at Canterbury Shaker Village. This week, Party of the Sun will be performing at 4 p.m.
“On the effervescent green lawn of our historic Meeting House (1792), under a grand canopy of maple trees, overlooking gorgeous rolling fields and hills, enjoy Sunday afternoon concerts tastefully crafted to showcase some of the best artists and musicians in southern New Hampshire,” the event promises.
