Progressive candidates can win this year
A recent Democratic primary victory has taken place in the state of Michigan. The candidate is Abdul El-Sayed, a trained epidemiologist, a Rhodes scholar, and in 2018 he finished second in the Democratic primary for governor. El-Sayed is a progressive candidate, supports universal health care and has run his campaign while taking no PAC from special interest groups like AIPAC. El-Sayed is now the Democratic challenger running against Republican Mike Rogers for the Michigan Senate seat.
Dr. Karishma Manzur is a trained scientist in biochemistry and molecular biology. Like El-Sayed, she is a progressive candidate running a grassroots campaign. Her platform includes Medicare for all, building more affordable homes, universal childcare and is in favor of raising the minimum wage to at least $20 per hour.
El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan has demonstrated that a progressive candidate can win in a purple state despite being outspent by competitors who largely play the establishment game.
Dr. Manzur is a well-spoken, highly educated candidate. She is calling for a humane foreign policy where our tax dollars are not funding forever wars like the current war in Iran.
