Stop 287(g) agreements with ICE
I moved to New Hampshire permanently at the end of May. My wife Sue has been here since 2022. As a Latino new to the state, I wanted to understand the issues facing Latino residents here, and a local reporter generously sat down with me over coffee and gave me some background.
I learned that dozens of New Hampshire police departments and sheriff’s offices now have 287(g) agreements with ICE, deputizing local officers to make immigration arrests. New Hampshire is the only state in New England where any local police departments participate in this program at all. Every other New England state has zero.
These agreements erode trust between immigrant communities and the police meant to protect them. They also come at real cost to taxpayers: ICE pays departments to sign on and to make arrests. Electing Democrats to the New Hampshire House and Senate is how we bar these agreements for good.
This November, that’s the choice in front of us.
