Canterbury, NH – Nadine Dahl of Canterbury, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Monday, August tenth, at Concord Hospital with her family by her side. She was 78.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Nadine grew up in a Navy family and spent large parts of her life in Hawaii and Germany. She was the first female ambulance attendant for the North Kingstown Ambulance Association Inc. Once her kids were in school, she attended NHTI and became a Registered Nurse. As an RN in New Hampshire, she went on to work at, among others, Lakes Region Hospital in Laconia, the State Hospital in Concord, U.S. Military Hospital at Wurzeburg in Germany, and the Eliot in Manchester. Later on, she worked for Tricare as a supervisor for the East Coast. She retired as a Nurse Unit Manager at the Merrimack County nursing home. Even after retirement, she followed her calling and worked as a visiting nurse, as well as the camp nurse on Star Island, and the Canterbury town Health Officer. Family and friends, above all else, were what mattered to Nadine. She was there for all of her grandchildren’s births, and her house in Canterbury was the home base for her children and their families as they moved around the country and around the world. She was adventurous and enjoyed traveling, did many road trips, saw much of the U.S. and Europe, and even visited Egypt, where she cruised the Nile and rode a camel at the pyramids. In addition to her family, Nadine’s dogs were everything to her. She was an adventurer, but every time she crossed the town line into Canterbury, she said she felt like she was home.
Nadine is survived by: her husband, William Dahl; son Peter Shephard, and his wife Sylvia, of Canterbury New Hampshire; daughter Sabrina Elliott, and her husband Vince, of Escondido, California; grandsons: Joshua Shephard, and his wife Emily, of Bedford New Hampshire; Johannes Shephard and his partner Maggie Schmidl of Amherst MA, William Elliott and his wife Abigail of Escondido, California; and granddaughter Emily Elliott of Escondido; and great grandchildren Arya and Isabella Shephard of Bedford New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her brothers Albert and John Nickelson.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 18th at noon, at the Canterbury United Community Church. The service will be followed by a gathering for family and friends at the Shephard residence. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nadine’s memory may be made to the Pope Memorial SPCA in Concord.
