A trans perspective on Heath Howard
As a trans person who has lived in the Granite State my entire life, I was extremely disappointed at the recent targeting of Heath Howard and accusations of him being transphobic toward a colleague and not being genuine in his support for our community. His voting record proves otherwise — he has been one of the most vocal, consistent supporters of his trans constituents and has stood to affirm our rights and safety here in our home state.
I can only wonder about the motivation to put out this kind of accusation so close to the primary, especially since the person who has made the accusation is involved in his opponent’s campaign and has now recanted on saying he was ever transphobic. This makes me think that her words were twisted to sow discord within the community about Heath and his commitment to us.
At a time when the LGBTQ+ community and trans people specifically are being targeted by legislative attacks on our rights, I do not believe this piece was written in good faith; instead meant to sway voters away from a candidate who has been a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ rights since before his campaign ever started.
The establishment Democrats should not be inaccurately airing year-old dirty laundry to hurt a political opponent, they should be focusing on actually doing things to secure our future and rights as LGBTQ+ people and supporting people like Heath whose history and voting record show his ongoing and sincere commitment to our community.
