Democrats and Republicans
I believe working Americans may be voting against their own economic interests when they support conservative policies. The Democratic Party has historically supported programs benefiting working people. Social Security, the 40-hour workweek, the federal minimum wage, child labor protections, bank deposit insurance, and financial market regulations were established during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration and the New Deal.
Later, Democratic administrations created programs such as CHIP, which provides health insurance to eligible low-income children, and the Affordable Care Act, which allows young adults to remain on their parents’ health insurance plans until age 26. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Rescue Plan of 2021 provided eligible Americans with $1,400 stimulus payments.
Nonpartisan analyses indicate that significant portions of recent Republican tax cuts have benefited corporations and high-income earners. Republicans generally favor smaller government and lower taxes, arguing that these policies promote economic growth. However, the benefits do not reach working families equally. Warren Buffett has argued that if other large corporations paid the IRS what he has paid, no other individual in America would have to owe a single dime of federal income or Social Security taxes.
In an era when some news organizations use entertainment to attract viewers and increase profits, one must evaluate the facts and avoid political propaganda. Religious beliefs should not automatically be equated with conservative politics. History proves the policies of the Democrats are more aligned with the working class.
