Holding lawbreakers accountable
In the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s First District, we have a hard choice to make, with such well-educated candidates and diverse careers. How do we decide among them?
If ever there was a time for lawyers, it’s now, in a time when Trump has become the lawbreaker-in-chief, assisted by his cabinet and the Supreme Court. When Reps. Raskin and Crow, or Sen. Whitehouse, who are attorneys, question a witness in hearings, it’s an interrogation to remember, and one that the witness is unlikely to forget. Trump’s continual challenges to the rule of law, which undermines our freedom, must be met head-on. I think candidate Christian Urrutia, an attorney who specializes in human rights and international law, who has successfully prosecuted a war criminal, has the most relevant education and work experience for this time.
To Urrutia, accountability for the criminality, corruption and lawlessness is central. He’s been responding to ICE lawbreaking with action, not just words, unlike other candidates. When Pease had hearings on the ICE flights, he drove all the way from Moultonborough to testify against ICE, citing violations of our constitutional rights. When opposition to an ICE warehouse in Merrimack began, only he contacted the organizers to offer help, which is one reason Rep. Wendy Thomas has endorsed his candidacy.
