Keep New Hampshire in the USA
Looking at the call to split New Hampshire into a separate country, I would like to make three observations.
First, the claim that New Hampshire is a net donor state is false. According to USAfacts.org in FY2024 New Hampshire received $2,735 more per-capita than it paid to the Federal government.
Second, when using the term “abusive relationship” to describe New Hampshire’s relation with the federal government, let’s be clear about the abuser. One thing that affects how much New Hampshire sends to Washington is Trump’s tax act of 2017, which eliminated the property tax deduction. Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and their Republican allies boasted about how smart they were in “sticking it to blue states.” If you’re concerned that Trump has forgotten about us, don’t worry. The 2027 Medicare and Medicaid cuts in the “Big Beautiful Bill” will be here soon enough.
Finally, in any political entity there are going to be net contributors and net recipients. I’m sure there are wards in Concord that are net donors, but we don’t go around wanting to split Concord into 10 different towns. If everybody bolted the minute they became a net donor we’d still be living in caves and foraging for food.
