An independent voter’s perspective
I am a registered independent voter. I do not believe that loyalty to any political party should come before loyalty to our country, our communities and the Constitution.
My views do not fit neatly into a partisan box. I lean fiscally conservative and socially moderate. I strongly support public safety, quality education, accessible healthcare, veterans services, justice and responsible government. Above all, I believe in democracy and in the constitutional principles that have sustained this nation through generations of disagreement and change.
I also believe that being independent means being willing to listen. I want to hear from Republicans, Democrats, independents and people whose views differ significantly from my own. Democracy is strengthened when we challenge our assumptions, examine evidence and respectfully listen to opposing arguments.
As I consider the choices before New Hampshire voters in the 2026 midterm elections, I currently find myself leaning toward Democratic candidates. That is not an expression of permanent party loyalty. It is where my evaluation of the choices available to me has led me at this moment.
My vote must be earned.
I will look at character, governing record, fiscal responsibility, respect for the Constitution and democratic institutions, commitment to public safety and willingness to protect education, healthcare and those who served our country.
I hope other Granite Staters — whatever their political affiliation — will do the same: listen to competing arguments, examine the record, ask difficult questions and then make their own informed decision.
We do not have to agree with one another to share responsibility for preserving our democracy.
