CHS football families demand adequate seating
This Friday night is Concord High School’s Homecoming game, but many football families will have nowhere to sit.
CHS has agreed to give approximately half of the home-side stands to the marching band. The school has communicated that students will instead have a designated section behind the end zone closest to the scoreboard.
The band absolutely deserves a place at Homecoming. But does accommodating the band require taking half of the home stands away from the families and spectators who are there to support the football team?
Have all alternatives been considered? Could the band use folding chairs or temporary seating in the opposite end zone? Could another area of Memorial Field be utilized? These seem like reasonable questions when the result is that students and football families are being displaced from the stands.
Football families have raised concerns about Memorial Field seating before and have asked school and athletic department leadership for solutions. This is not a new problem, and it should not take a new stadium to address it.
Replacing Memorial Field may be the long-term answer, but that does not solve the immediate problem. Our students are playing here now. Their families, friends, classmates and community members should be able to attend their games and have a reasonable place to sit.
We are simply asking the school to find a solution that works for everyone.
