The Concord Board of Education voted Wednesday night to reverse the decision it made in Dec. 2023 to relocate a new middle school to the area in East Concord near Broken Ground School and voted instead to design a new school where Rundlett is now in the South End.

Concord Board of Education candidates in contested races will field questions from Monitor reporters at a forum on Tuesday, October 20.

There are two contested races for school board this year, one in Zone B – which includes the western and southern parts of Concord – and one in Zone C – encompassing most of the city east of the Merrimack River. In each race, an incumbent faces one challenger.

The Concord School District is in the middle of construction on a new school and talks with the city about an overhaul of Memorial Field. It faced a tough budget cycle this past year, where spiking costs and falling revenue led to staff layoffs. It is in the crosscurrents of rapidly changing education policy out of the statehouse. Teachers, administrators, lawmakers and students alike are considering how the future of education should look when screen time and artificial intelligence factor into the picture.

Questions will probe these themes and more. If you have a question you’d like moderators to ask, send it to cmclaughlin@cmonitor.com and ysaadi@cmonitor.com.

The forum will take place in the Concord High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. on October 20.
