More than wins and losses
Amid so much negative news, it’s important to pause and celebrate the good things happening in our communities. Belmont High School has given us one of those reasons.
Belmont High School has been named the recipient of the 2025-26 Division III Sportsmanship Award. On its own, that is a tremendous accomplishment. What makes it even more meaningful is that Belmont also won the award in 2023-24 and was runner-up in 2024-25. In a division with roughly 23 schools, being recognized three consecutive years is anything but common.
What stands out to me is that this recognition reflects far more than athletic performance. It reflects the values of the Belmont and Canterbury communities. As a parent, I’ve seen firsthand the effort that district leaders, administrators, teachers, coaches and families invest in helping students understand that character matters. The lessons being taught extend well beyond the playing field.
What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is that it comes during a period of tremendous athletic success for Belmont teams. This is not a consolation prize. Our student-athletes have shown that it is possible to pursue championships while still treating opponents, officials and one another with respect.
Belmont and Canterbury should be incredibly proud. This award says something special about our students, our schools and the people who work every day to help shape them into outstanding young adults.
