Why we should vote Democratic in November

On a Jan. 13 episode of “The Granite Discourse” podcast, House Majority Leader Jason Osborne, a Free State Project transplant turned Republican power broker, was asked how long he planned to stay in the House. His answer: “I’ve always had a goal of 2030. That will be the point at which Republicans will have total domination of New Hampshire, and we won’t have to worry about Democrats anymore.”

Read that again. The man running the majority party in the House is looking forward to the day when only one party (his) controls our state. That isn’t governing. That is fascist authoritarianism.

Now note the year. 2030 is a census year, and the census kicks off the next round of redistricting. In New Hampshire, the legislature draws the maps. Draw your own conclusions.

If you want a Legislature that answers to its party instead of to you, vote Republican and let the Free Staters run rampant. If you want a state where every voter is heard and every district is competitive, vote Democratic and demand an independent, nonpartisan commission to draw our voting districts.

And to be clear, this isn’t about helping one party. Gerrymandering is wrong no matter who does it, because it lets politicians pick their voters instead of voters picking their legislators. Let’s end gerrymandering for good. Vote Democrat in November.
