We need centered, bipartisan state government

As we approach Election Day, the attacks are ramping up. One tactic is to accuse anyone an inch left of center to be a socialist. No Democratic state candidate I am aware of is promoting anything close to socialism. All the Democratic candidates I am aware of are qualified, reasonable, service-oriented people who just want our government to work effectively and fairly.

I think there is a common belief that we have gone too far down the libertarian road. They see that the Free Stater-controlled Republican party is trying to starve public education, reducing the state’s contribution and diverting those depleted funds to private schools including home schoolers, with absolutely no oversight. Much of these diverted funds have gone to kids who were already at elite private schools such as Philips Exeter. The Free Stater/Republicans believe that local property taxes should fund public education rather than the state, ignoring our own constitution, that mandates that the state must provide adequate funding for public schools. Then they have the hypocrisy to push a state law to limit how much a given town can spend on education.

This has gone too far. We need level-headed, reasonable legislators and local control of our public-school budgets. It is time for the pendulum to swing back toward the center. It’s time to vote the carpetbagging Free Stater Republicans out of office. On Nov. 3, I urge you to vote Blue and vote No on the state mandated cap on school budgets.
