How sad

The headline of the My Turn by Brad Stull on Oct. 27 is making me write this letter. The word “writing” is what struck me, but not in the way he meant.

I received a “thank you ” note from a great grandniece for attending her high school graduation party. I have to admit just receiving the note was a total surprise. We seniors rarely receive thank you notes for the many gifts we give. I digress.

When I received it, I thought which child sent me this. There was no return address and the printing on the envelope was that of a first or second grader, as was the message inside. I was stunned, how did she get to graduate from high school with this kind of printing, never mind writing in script. She is now in college studying to become a social worker. Will she be able to get a job if this is how she writes? Oh, yes of course, everything will be done on a computer or iPad by AI.

I presume that is how she graduated. How sad. What are teachers teaching in the beginning grades? Or are they using computers in kindergarten and first grade? Yes, I’m really old school, I did my first grade in a one room schoolhouse where I learned neat printing. Palmer method when I went to second grade and beyond in a bi-lingual school, and I still can write quite well if I put my mind to it.
