They do work
My first thought is to ask you to please go and vote on Tuesday. The absolute biggest threat to our democracy is apathy.
When you vote, please keep public education in mind. I don’t mean just Question 2, which deserves a No vote. I mean think of public education when you choose who you will send to Concord. The Republican party in New Hampshire seems to be actively trying to destroy the public education system (or as the Free Staters say “government schools.”) They support alternatives but have no regard for the 150,000 kids in public schools who need a quality education. Evidence of this was in the latest Suncook Valley Taxpayer paper which I received. An article by Rep. Clayton Wood starts with the statement “What we have is not working.” In his article he never acknowledges that lack of funding at the state level might contribute to the “not working.”
Our public schools do work. They work for anyone who walks in the door and they alone are obligated to take everyone who walks in the door. They work every day for the kids whose parents believe in public education, for kids with special needs, for kids who need a safe place to be, for the kid in the advanced placement class and the kid in the remedial class.
They work. They just need more support from our state government.
