A Belmont man was arrested on assault and resisting arrest charges Friday after police say he tried to break away from an officer’s control and ripped off his duty belt following a domestic violence situation.
Belmont police responded to a call about 5:10 p.m. on Horne Road for the report of a man assaulting two people. While the arresting officer led the man, 60-year-old James Mooney III of Belmont, out of the house, he began yelling at the alleged victims as they were being interviewed, police said. As the officer tried redirecting him to the cruiser, Mooney tried to spin out of the officer’s control. Mooney then grabbed and ripped the officer’s radio off his belt.
Three officers got Mooney under their control and put him in handcuffs, but police said Mooney continued to resist and officers used a Taser to control him. Police said Mooney was treated by medics for Taser exposure and was released later in the evening on $6,000 personal recognizance bail.
Mooney was charged with criminal mischief, resisting arrest, two counts of domestic violence simple assault and one count of simple assault on a police officer.
