A Florida man and woman were identified as the two people killed in a crash Friday on Route 106 in Canterbury.
Jeannette Mello, 68, and her husband, Dennis Mello, 69, who also resided in Freetown, Mass., were pronounced dead at the scene, Canterbury police said Tuesday.
Louis Morris of Allenstown suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
The Mellos were traveling north on Route 106 when their vehicle crossed over the center line and crashed head-on into a flatbed truck driven by Morris, police said. The head-on crash happened Friday afternoon just north of New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Canterbury police Officer Aaron Smith said his investigation of the crash has concluded, although the cause remains unknown.
“I don’t know why they went over the center line,” he said of the couple. “It is likely we will never know the answer.”
Witnesses reported that one of the vehicles was smoking after the fatal collision. Smith clarified Tuesday that there was no vehicle fire.
A portion of Route 106 at Clough Hill Road was closed for several hours as police investigated the cause of the crash.
The accident was one of three fatal crashes in a three-day span that left 10 people dead including seven motorcyclists hit by a truck in the North Country. A Loudon woman was killed Sunday in a three-car crash on Route 106 in Loudon.
