PENACOOK – There is a reason the Pembroke Academy boys’ lacrosse team wanted to control tempo and simply keep the ball away from the Merrimack Valley attackmen.

The reason is this: When the Pride have the ball, it hardly misses. That was clear in Monday’s game.

Dillon Arrant led Merrimack Valley with six goals on eight shots and the Pride beat Pembroke, 14-3, in Division II action. Pembroke entered the game on a run of four wins while MV won its fourth in a row. Both teams are 4-2.

Merrimack Valley won the game from the faceoff circle, where they controlled 11 of 16 draws. That was where the game was decided, Pembroke Academy Coach Tim Vasconcellos said, in addition to fighting for groundballs, which usually ended up in a MV stick.

“They were absolutely tenacious on those loose balls, those 50-50 possessions,” Vasconcellos said of the Pride. “That’s what can make and break a game. … They would get a goal and then the next possession, and those extra possessions really started to add up.”

Coby Mercier, Peyton Russell and Josh Farmer collected four loose balls apiece to lead Merrimack Valley, which gathered 32 groundballs in all.

“I thought we controlled the faceoff circle and we did very well with the groundballs today, so that was major difference,” said MV Coach Sean O’Brien, now in his 17th season with the program.

The teams were tied with two goals each after the first quarter. Merrimack Valley pulled ahead, 3-2, in the second quarter on Arrant’s second goal of the afternoon. The Pride kept the lead for good from there and led 7-3 at halftime.

Glenn Dion, a senior, scored all three goals for Pembroke.

Merrimack Valley quickly went to work in the third quarter, pulling away with five goals for a nine-goal lead. The Pride added two more in the fourth quarter as the clock counted down to the final horn.

Pembroke never slowed down in their pursuit through the second half, but the Spartans struggled to create scoring chances and break through the Pride’s defense.

“When you get a deficit like that you can’t get it all back on one play,” Vasconcellos said. “You have to chip away, and that’s what we tried to do. But a team like (MV), they’re going to take care of their possessions. They’re going to be patient.”

“Those little lacrosse things,” Vasconcellos later added, “you know, catching and throwing – things people take for granted sometimes – we were sloppy on those. And if you play sloppy, you get sloppy results.”

Merrimack Valley may have been more experienced in those little lacrosse things. The Pride transitioned down the field quickly, and yet with patience. The team made clean, easy passes around the goal before a lane opened in front for an attack at the net. They showed similar patience on defense as the score did not dictate them to be aggressive.

Arrant and Mericer (goal, three assists), along with fellow attackman Max Lacy (two goals, one assist), are a young trio that plays with the cohesiveness typically found among upperclassmen. Arrant and Lacy are sophomores and Mercier is a freshman, but the three have played together since their early elementary seasons in youth lacrosse.

“We always had continuity and chemistry, and now that it’s high school it’s easy to put things together,” Arrant said.

They put together nine goals on Monday.

“They’re very talented kids and great lacrosse players,” O’Brien said.

Caleb Willett scored three goals for the Pride, while Evan Martin and Zach LaRoche added one apiece. Peyton Russell had two assists. Chase Mercier and Josh Farmer each had one. Matt Jarvis made eight saves in net.

David Hammon made nine saves for Pembroke.

The Pride will travel to face John Stark on Tuesday, the second of four games on the schedule this week. Pembroke Academy also has a busy week with four games, all on the road. The Spartans face Goffstown on Tuesday.

“You can tell we’re young and we’re going to make those young mistakes,” Vasconcellos said. “That’s what we’re trying to get out of our game. Today was a great opportunity to learn.”
