Monday is the 250th anniversary of New Hampshire becoming the first U.S. colony to establish an independent government with the signing of the first state constitution.

To mark the anniversary, the Secretary of Stateโ€™s office has scheduled a program open to the public. It will feature a keynote address and reading of the 1776 Constitution by historical reenactor Michael LePage, reflecting on New Hampshireโ€™s leadership during the Revolutionary era, the collapse of royal authorities and the creation of government through the Provincial Congress.

LePage has been a historical interpreter and reenactor since 1993.

The program is one of many that will be taking place this year as the country celebrates 250 years of democracy.

It will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, in the New Hampshire State Archives at 9 Ratification Way in Concord.
