The insurance challenge in New Hampshire
As a student at Southern New Hampshire University, my English research examined rising homeowners’ insurance costs in New Hampshire and how increasing natural disasters play a crucial role in driving these higher premiums. The rise in insurance costs is placing growing financial pressure on homeowners, making it difficult for families to afford and maintain property ownership. In 2023, New Hampshire weather was marked by extraordinarily heavy rainfall that led to flash flooding across the state and the Merrimack Valley region, damaging roads, homes and infrastructure.
In a recent article by Realtor.com, it reported that natural disaster losses grew across the country, raising premiums more broadly. Homeowners are feeling the impact through insurance bills. In the New Hampshire Bulletin, officials from New Hampshire Department of Insurance are urging homeowners to consider flood insurance as the potential for risk becomes increasingly unpredictable. Highlighted in the Bulletin, the standard homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood-related events. As a result, homeowners must obtain separate flood insurance coverage through programs such as the National Flood Insurance Program.
In conclusion, rising flood risks and insurance costs in New Hampshire highlight a growing affordability challenge for homeowners, leaving some residents more financially vulnerable despite increasing coverage needs.
