When families needed an advocate, Janet Stevens showed up
Families of medically complex children carry two full-time jobs: caring for our children and fighting for the services that keep them safe at home.
This summer, a group of nine families learned that managed care organizations had reduced or denied our children’s medically necessary nursing care. We reached out to Executive Councilor Janet Stevens.
She didn’t just tell us she understood. She kept taking our calls, learned each child’s situation and went directly to department leadership and the Governor. She publicly called for an investigation and for immediate protections for medically complex children.
Within about a week, the first denials were overturned. On July 29, state officials announced that all three Medicaid MCOs would restore the nursing hours they had cut. Janet got it done for our nine families and for more than 150 families like ours.
She still shows up whenever a new issue comes up, and she still checks in to see how we’re doing. She gets things done with tenacity, kindness and compassion.
We are not political insiders. We are parents. It is easy to talk about vulnerable children in a campaign speech. It is something else to make the calls and keep pushing until something changes.
That is why NH Families for Home Nursing supports Janet Stevens for re-election to the Executive Council in District 3. When you are the parent of a medically complex child, you need someone who shows up. Janet showed up for us.
