The days are noticeably getting colder, and as I look out of the window to the left of my desk, it is considerably gloomy and rainy. I’m feeling the cold in my apartment too: bundling under blankets on the couch while wearing sweatpants and a hoodie.
In reflection of the chillier weather, the outdoor activities we’ve been used to all summer are starting to dwindle. Most of the events I’m sharing this week will be taking place inside, shielded away from the drizzle and the wind.
Kicking things off this week is a showing of the 1956 classic “Giant” at NHTI’s Sweeney Auditorium on Friday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The award-winning western film, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary, was directed by George Stevens and features James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. “Giant” is the first film in NHTI’s Friday Night at the Movies series that will go until January. Tickets are $10 per person and free for NHTI students.
Staying with the throw-back theme, the Vintage and Antique Car Show in Canterbury will showcase hundreds of cars with a wide range of funky colors, vintage designs and older mechanics. Stop by any time from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 to enjoy coffee, donuts and live music as you look over automobile relics of the past. The event is free for all.
The Metropolitan Opera is bringing a dazzling series of live movie theater from the New York stage to cinemas across the world — including Capitol Center for the Arts. A host of showings will be presented into the new year, including Giuseppe Verdi’s “Macbeth” on Saturday at 1 p.m.: a “thrilling take on the immortal Shakespearean tale.” Tickets start at $32 and are discounted for seniors and students.
Finishing off the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 18 is Arts Alley’s Courtyard Tailgate, streaming the New England Patriots game against the New York Jets. Come decked out in Patriots gear and enjoy food, drinks and lawn games while being kept warm by nearby heaters. The event is free for all ages, with food and beverage available for purchase.
You can hear me talk more about weekend events on WNHN-LP, 94.7 FM from Wednesday through Saturday.
Arts Ahead is in partnership with WNHN. Coming up next week on “What’s Your Story?” co-hosts Fred Richards and Cary Gladstone will be talking with Scott Spradling, an Emmy Award-winning former broadcast journalist who fronts a 12-piece band playing tunes from the 1940s until today. Listen to “What’s Your Story?” Mondays, 8 to 8:30 a.m. and repeated Sundays, 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., on WNHN-LP, 94.7 FM, and streaming at wnhnfm.org.
