The Bow field hockey team took the field with extra emotion when the Falcons faced Kearsarge on Tuesday.

“Our girls decided to play the game in honor of a young man, Joe Sell, who was a Bow High graduate who passed away a couple weeks ago,” Bow Coach Tracy Berube said. “So the girls all wore purple to remember him and they are starting up a collection for Hope for New Hampshire Recovery in his name. So they were able to collect some money for that and they played with a lot of heart and spirit today.”

Remembering Sell, who graduated from Bow in 2014 and passed away on Sept. 7, was obviously the first priority for the Falcons. But they also found a 2-0 win against the visiting Cougars (2-5).

“They played really well today,” Berube said. “And the thing that I’m most proud of is everybody on our team got a lot of playing time, everybody from the starters to the last girl on the bench. They all played awesome today, it was a real team win.”

Berube sensed even before the game that was she was going to get a good effort from her team.

“From the moment I walked into the team room today they were different,” the coach said. “They were very serious and very focused.”

That focus turned into a goal midway through the first half. The scoring play started with a 25-yard hit that Claire Mulvaney controlled before dribbling for five yards and sending a strong pass to Sonya Delorie. The junior forward got a piece of Mulvaney’s pass in the air and then tapped it into the net for the 1-0 lead with 13:30 left in the opening half.

Bow (4-4) took that lead into halftime and Delorie doubled it with 14:28 left in the second half. This goal came off a penalty corner and Delorie finished amid a scrum in front of the cage.

Goalies Lyndsey Wheeler (three saves), Sara Anoli and Courtney Baer combined for the shutout.

Berube is happy with the progress her team has been making in recent weeks and is eager to see how the Falcons fare Thursday against undefeated Mondanock, a team they lost to, 2-0, on Sept. 12.

“We’ve been working really hard at just letting go of the fear of not doing a good job out there and just playing because it’s fun,” Berube said. “I think things are turning around, I hope they are anyway, we’ll see Thursday. I’m curious to see how we do playing them at our field and coming off a pretty good streak. I’m happy with the way we’re playing and I think it will be a good game.”
