Many people like Gov. Chris Sununu’s affability and his reasonableness when issuing COVID-related restrictions. Yes, the governor is a pleasant person and has handled the state’s response to COVID better than have many other state executives.

But these facts should not lead people to vote for Gov. Sununu. The more important fact is, he doesn’t care enough about the basic economic welfare, the basic political rights, or the basic safety of New Hampshire people.

Basic economic welfare: The governor vetoed a bill to establish a wage higher than the federal minimum at a time when many are barely getting by, and a bill to establish family and medical leave at a time when many specially need it.

Basic political rights: The governor vetoed bipartisan legislation calling for an independent redistricting commission to create fair legislative districts based on the 2020 census.

Basic safety: Although none of the bills threatened the gun rights of law-abiding people, the governor vetoed safety-protecting bills to establish background checks for commercial firearms sales, to impose a waiting period between the purchase and delivery of a firearm, and to prohibit firearms on school property.
