I have a few issues with Dr. James Fieseher’s My Turn, “Can we enforce the Second Amendment?” First, he claims that firearm regulations work because no firearms were used by rioters during the Jan. 6 insurrection. This claim ignores the fact that Chicago has fairly strong gun laws and yet had 4,033 shootings in 2020. California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country but leads the nation in mass shootings. Firearm regulations don’t stop criminals.
Second, like most gun control advocates, Dr. Fieseher fails to mention what he considers to be “common sense” firearm laws. How can I decide if I agree with him if I have no idea what laws he is advocating for. Some ideas like universal background checks are more acceptable to gunowners than others, like gun registration or gun confiscation.
Finally, I don’t think it is fair for Dr. Fieseher to associate the estimated 72 million gunowners in the United States with the individuals who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection. The vast majority of US gunowners are law abiding citizens that do not take part in criminal activity.
