It was encouraging to see that those responsible for educating Epsom’s children have finally decided to remove the Confederate battle flag from the mural of American history displayed at the school. A small symbolic act during the current period of national enlightenment.
I participated in the meeting held at the school to discuss removal in 2017, and voiced my concerns at that meeting. Specifically, I was dismayed that this mural, with it’s depiction of the South honoring the Confederacy, hung at the school while Union civil war veterans/fatalities lay silently in a grave yard at the end of my street. Few others spoke up for removal, with the notable exception of the only non-white attendee. The argument that the flag must be kept or history would be lost made no more sense than support for a similar mural of the world with a swastika emblazoned over Germany.
I support replacement by an historic representation of the South on Epsom Central School’s mural which is not also a symbol of hate and racism.
