The extreme abortion bills being heard at the New Hampshire State House concern me as a resident of this state. The four bills, HB 1475, HB 1678, HB 1675 and HB 1640, hurt patients who are seeking an abortion and infringe on an individual’s right to decide what is best for them and their families.
Two bills are of particular concern to me: HB 1475 and HB 1678 are both unconstitutional abortion bans. The first is so extreme that it would restrict abortion access after six weeks, before most even know they are pregnant. For most people, six weeks is the matter of a missed period. Other states across the country have tried this kind of ban before, and none are in effect because they’re unconstitutional. Why should New Hampshire fall for the same tactics that other states have failed to pass because of legal precedent?
With extreme politicians nationwide engaged in a full-on assault on reproductive health care, it’s more important than ever that our representatives here in New Hampshire stand up for our rights. Politicians should not be pushing legislation that only serves to undermine access to safe, legal abortion care.
The bills, HB 1475, HB 1640, HB 1675 and HB 1678, ban or restrict abortion services. The bills should be voted “inexpedient to legislate” as recommended last week in committee. We must uphold New Hampshire’s long history of supporting individual rights by tabling these restrictive bills.
