Steve Leone has been named the publisher of the Concord Monitor as the newspaper continues efforts to build community partnerships and evolve its digital and print operations.

Under Leone’s leadership, the Monitor recently hired two news reporters who are funded by a partnership between the paper, non-profit news organization Report for America and community sponsors.

In addition, the Monitor is one of the member organizations of the Granite State News Collaborative, a statewide nonprofit that produces original reporting and allows New Hampshire news outlets to share content.

Leone, who was hired as Monitor editor in 2014, will be working to find new ways to innovate and collaborate in a rapidly changing news environment, while also maintaining the high standards the Monitor has set for itself over its history. The Monitor was recently named daily newspaper of the year in New Hampshire and it is consistently recognized as among the best of its size in New England.

“We all know this is a critically important time for local journalism.” said Leone. “I’m excited to work with the community on new partnerships that will help the Monitor continue its mission as a strong independent voice in New Hampshire.”

Leone will also move into the newly created role of Vice President of News for Newspapers of New England, the parent company of the Monitor, the Valley News in West Lebanon, N.H., the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript in Peterborough, N.H., The Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass., The Recorder in Greenfield, Mass, and the Athol Daily News in Athol, Mass.

Jonathan Van Fleet, the Monitor’s managing editor since 2014, takes over as editor, where he will oversee all newsroom operations. He will continue in his role of leading the Monitor’s local reporting staff.
