After a scoreless first period, the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team erupted for three goals in the second and added three more in the third en route to a 6-0 thrashing of the University of Connecticut in Durham on Saturday night.

Charlie Kelleher sparked the outburst with a power-play goal assisted by Ara Nazarian and Max Gildon early in the second frame. Brendan van Riemsdyk and Liam Blackburn each added a goal to give the Wildcats (9-8-8 overall, 5-5-5 Hockey East) a 3-0 cushion at the second intermission.

Angus Crookshank and Patrick Grasso extended the advantage in the third before Joe Sacco’s power-play tally capped a balanced scoring effort. The Wildcats had 13 skaters register at least one point, and none had more than two points.

Despite the lopsided result, UConn outshot UNH by a 36-31 margin. Bedford native Mike Robinson stopped all 36 shots to earn his third shutout of the season.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Maine on Friday and Saturday.
