Concord’s Chris Pinkham and Liam Bennett both started for the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team in a losing effort, while Bow’s Alex Nagy helped the University of Vermont advance in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
The UNH Wildcats (15-5) took advantage of a Florida International University own goal to tie the game, 1-1, and a goal off a free kick by Rory Driscoll tied the game, 2-2, in the 108th minute, but FIU won the shootout, 10-9, after 12 rounds of penalty kicks.
Pinkham, a graduate student midfielder, and Bennett, a junior back, both converted their PKs, but it wasn’t enough to put UNH through to the third round.
Nagy, a fifth-year midfielder, assisted on UVM’s game-winning goal to help the Catamounts (15-3-2) complete the come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Saint Mary’s University in Sunday’s second round match.
Nagy scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime victory over Quinnipiac in the first round.
Vermont will host UCLA in the third round on Saturday.
