With our first-in-the-nation primary behind us, we can turn some of our energies to electing a new governor. I will be supporting Andru Volinsky in the upcoming gubernatorial primary on Sept. 8. I supported Tom Steyer in the presidential primary because of his organizing vision, commitment to climate and determination to beat the incumbent. Those reasons also lead me to support Volinsky.
Steyer started NextGen Climate, which turned out college students to vote in the 2016 election, and which continues strong grassroots organizing of young people in New Hampshire and across the country. I salute candidates who organize the masses as Andru Volinsky has done on behalf of public education funding. He and his team have organized forums – 60 of them – in every corner of the state as they educate and motivate people to take action to fix a broken public education funding system.
Steyer was one of the first to call on President Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. Volinsky was early to oppose the Granite Bridge Pipeline, a proposed fracked-gas pipeline running from the Seacoast to Epping. He’s the only candidate in the governor’s race to do so. He’s been a strong climate leader, also opposing Northern Pass and representing the interveners as a lawyer.
To defeat Sununu in November, Democrats will need a nominee who’s not afraid to take a stand. Andy Volinsky is that man.
