The Concord Historical Societyโs Second Thursday program in March will be โA History of Movies in Concord,โ presented by Paul Brogan on March 10 at 7 p.m. In the 1950s, Concord was home to four movie theaters and a drive-in. Each week thousands of city residents would go to the movies, often more than once. The premier theater in the city was the Capitol Theater, now the Chubb Theatre and part of the Capitol Center for the Arts. The Capitol would have up to five showings a day, sometimes drawing up to a thousand viewers for each show. Movies were primary entertainment, not only in Concord but around the country. Paul Brogan has written a history of The Concord Theatre, and has been part of Concordโs theater community for many years. His stories convey his knowledge and passion for the topic. Among them are the time actor David Niven went to the Concord Theatre, or Joseph P. Kenned came to town and threatened to shut down a competitor theater, Kenned owned the Capitol Theater. โA History of Movies in Concordโ will be presented in person at the Carriage House at Kimball-Jenkins. It will also be live-streamed. The program originally scheduled for March was to be about immigration past and present to Concord, however presenter Becky Field has had to cancel her program. Our April program will be a history of the Concord Fire Department. These programs are free and open to the public. They may also be viewed live by going to the historical societyโs website, concordhistoricalsociety.org.
