It’s the first real freeze, that moment each year when the temperature drops below 32 degrees and then more or less stays there for the winter. One hour the pond is ice-free. The next, you can see solids forming if you look closely. In areas sheltered from the wind, ice crystals begin to line the shore, to circle dead grasses and floating leaves; in more open water they gather into small wind-sculpted sheets that collect in tiny coves. The intricate visuals will quickly disappear, congealing into rock-solid blocks of opaque white that will seal up the pond for the winter. Crews started sawing blocks for the Rockywold-Deephaven Camps on Thursday, something they’ve been doing for more than a century. Last year, the three-day harvest didn’t start until Feb. 6 due to rain, warm temperatures and wind. The recent cold snap made for better ice conditions this year. Instead of refrigeration units, campers use lake ice packed into insulated icehouses that keep the blocks frozen through summer. If the ice gets to 11 or 12 inches thick, up to 200 tons are removed. The 16-by-19-inch ice blocks weigh between 120 and 160 pounds each. This year, the ice is being removed from Squaw Cove, an isolated spot along Squam Lake.
