I have a rule of thumb in my personal risk analysis: if the risk seems less than 1 in a million, I don’t worry much about it. I received both doses of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine which should give me about 95% protection from contracting COVID-19. That remaining 5% is equivalent to a risk of 50,000 in a million, alarmingly high.
Given the new surge due to Independence Day gatherings and the arrival of the Delta variant, I’ve resumed masking in settings like grocery stores. I sometimes tell the mask averse that “I’m strong enough to wear a mask.” In the meantime, kudos to the medical professionals who are treating the “pandemic of the unvaccinated.” I’d have trouble doing that without asking each patient “Why didn’t you get vaccinated?”
