Letter: For the party, not the country

Reading the article about the Republican Women’s Lilac Luncheon featuring Donald Trump, I found it incredulous that so many so adulate this nightmare. One woman said “I like the way he respects women, no matter what anyone says.” “Grab ‘em by the pussy” (his words) Trump, the thrice married, E. Jean Carroll abuser, Stormy Daniels’ adulterer etc., is guilty of indisputably repugnant behavior. This inveterate liar is the leader of the Republican Party. A twice impeached insurrectionist, he sent his “hang-Pence” mob to the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021 to “fight like hell” to take back the presidency. He watched it unfold on television, even as he did nothing to stop it.

Why would he? Trump lost the election. He claimed such because of election fraud, a loss he will never acknowledge. This is heretical to democracy. The leader of his mob was found guilty of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 18 years in prison. What does that make Trump? And these people want him to be the U.S. president again? These profoundly disturbing truths are mere “inconvenience?” Why does this behavior not register? He maintained “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters.” Trump is the Republican leader for 2024 even as criminal indictments close around him. He is a clear and present danger to democracy. And yet there is virtually no moral courage amongst Republican Party leaders. They work for the party, not for the country.
