Letter: We underestimate Trump at our peril

Donald Trump had a busy September changing the subject away from his latest amazing escapades. New York Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that the amoral demagogue who sent his armed followers into Congress to overturn the 2020 election also grossly overvalued his real estate holdings when seeking loans. And he undervalued them when paying taxes. Engoron will decide this fall if Trump pays the full $250 million in damages sought by prosecutors and loses control of his companies to receivership. To distract attention from failures like that, Trump invited anyone to kill retiring General Mark Milley, the highest ranking commander in America.

Trump announced he is skipping the presidential debates because the public “knows who I am and what a successful presidency I had.” As full disclosure, he might have added that he goes to trial soon for stealing top-secret documents, for leading the insurrection, for trying to steal a win in the Georgia election, and for slandering the woman he sexually abused and already owes $5 million from her earlier lawsuit. Trump fared rather badly in his crusade to shut down Congress over the federal debt limit. “This is also the last chance to defund these political prosecutions against me and other patriots,” he warned. By patriots he meant his supporters who stormed the Capitol. Lawmakers ignored Trump and saved the economy with hours to spare. Remember this. Trump poses a massive threat to truth and the American democracy.
