Letter: The electoral college is outdated

The electoral college system, as it stands now, is an outdated system. There is no reason we shouldn’t elect our presidents by a nationwide popular vote. Every person’s vote should be equal, and the presidential candidate who gets the most votes nationwide should win. There is no reason to continue to disenfranchise a large percentage of our population because of where they live.

Several states have already passed the National Popular Vote law, and the First in the Nation, New Hampshire, should join them in bringing fairness to our presidential elections. As of February 2024, 16 states have joined the compact, totaling the equivalent of 205 electoral votes. Without our voice, though, our representatives and senators won’t know that we want the legislature to pass legislation to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
