Letter: Support trans athletes

I write not just as a concerned parent, but as a voice for justice, pleading against the proposed bills that threaten to rob transgender girls like my 15-year-old daughter, Parker, of their right to belong and grow through sports. Parker’s sports journey, which began at age four, has been more than just games; it’s been a crucial platform for learning leadership, teamwork, and resilience, nurtured by a supportive network of coaches, teammates, and school administrators. The rationale behind these bills, that transgender girls have an unfair advantage, is unfounded and contradicts our lived experience. Despite Parker’s dedication, her team faced challenges, winning no games last season, which clearly dispels the myth of an inherent advantage.
These measures, therefore, are not solutions but rather discriminatory actions cloaked in concern, undermining equal educational opportunities and sowing division. The potential exclusion of Parker from the sports she loves is a heartbreak that transcends personal loss; it signals a retreat from our shared values of fairness, equality, and inclusivity. This fight is bigger than one child’s right to play sports; it’s about affirming our commitment to a community where every young person, irrespective of their gender identity, is valued and supported. I urge us all to stand against HB 1205, SB 524, and SB 375. Let’s protect the rights of all children to participate, learn, and thrive in sports. Together, we can champion a more inclusive and just future. Thank you for considering this urgent appeal.
