Letter: Contact your representative

During the full session of the NH House of Representatives this Thursday, March 14, there will be a floor vote on HB 1569. This bill removes the ability of those registering on election day to sign a sworn affidavit if they lack physical proof of identity, age, citizenship, or domicile. An affidavit is a powerful legal document with serious consequences for a voter who attests to an untrue statement. Secretary of State David Scanlan and Governor Chris Sununu have repeatedly stood by the integrity, transparency, and accuracy of our elections.

The use of affidavits has been proven to be safe and secure over decades. This bill seeks to address a problem that doesn’t exist. New voters, people who move frequently, young people, seniors transitioning to assisted living, and those experiencing housing insecurity would be most likely to feel the impact of this bill. Difficult life circumstances should not cause a voter to be disenfranchised. I ask you to contact your representatives and urge them to vote Inexpedient to Legislate on HB 1569.
