Letter: Debunking misconceptions in NH abortion laws

Published: 09-04-2024 3:00 PM

As the 2024 presidential election nears, abortion remains a polarizing issue in America. In New Hampshire, debates surrounding abortion laws have intensified. It is crucial to provide clarity on the state’s regulations and dispel misconceptions.

New Hampshire’s abortion laws offer significant protection to women:

1. The state allows abortions up to 24 weeks (6 months) of pregnancy for any reason, a threshold higher than most states.

2. Abortions are permitted beyond 24 weeks (6 months) if the mother’s life or health is at risk or in cases of fetal abnormalities.

3. New Hampshire’s viability laws largely mirror neighboring states.

Despite these realities, some seek political gain by distorting the facts. This disservice to New Hampshire women only adds confusion and turmoil during an already challenging time. While maintaining our pro-life stance, we believe a respectful and truthful dialogue is essential. Women deserve accurate information to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. By setting aside political agendas and focusing on empathy, compassion, and truth, we can create a supportive environment for all individuals impacted by these complex situations.
