Letter: Poachers should receive severe punishment

As a hunter, conservationist, and retired wildlife biologist, I was pleased to learn that NH Fish and Game officers recently took down a ring of five wildlife poachers (Monitor, 10/29). However, I am disappointed and stunned that the punishment for the offenses was so lenient. The article stated that dozens of animals were illegally killed, and that some of the killing was quote “just competition to see who could get the most (illegal kills).” Conservation Officer Ronald Arsenault was quoted a saying that this was the worst case of poaching that he has seen in his 16-year career.

The article stated that a range of fines and hunting license suspensions were handed down to the five poachers, and implies that the most significant of those was a “nearly $5,000 fine and a 3 1/2 year suspension of hunting” for one of the five men. In my mind, such total disrespect for wildlife and disregard for hunting laws should require much stricter punishment. All of these men should have their hunting privileges revoked for life, should spend some time in jail, and should be fined amounts significant enough that will make them think twice about repeating their despicable behavior.
