Letter: Cruelty of Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Spending Bill’

Published: 07-07-2025 8:19 AM

“This bill is a farce” – Senator Angus King (I - ME). “Imagine a bunch of guys sitting around a table saying, ‘I’ve got a great idea. Let’s give $32,000 worth of tax breaks to a millionaire and we’ll pay for it by taking health insurance away from lower-income and middle-income people. And to top it off, how about we cut food stamps, we cut SNAP, we cut food aid to people?’... I’ve been in this business of public policy now for 20 years, eight years as governor, 12 years in the United States Senate. I have never seen a bill this bad. I have never seen a bill that is this irresponsible, regressive, and downright cruel.”

Seductively, President Trump calls it “big and beautiful,” his spending bill he wants passed by July 4. Two notable hold-out Republicans (may they be joined by two more), Sen. Thom Tillis (R - NC) and Sen. Rand Paul (R - KY) are not voting for it. Some Midwestern Republican senators are considering a “no”: foreseeing loss of Medicare coverage closing down already struggling area hospitals.

A presidential candidate briefly in 2016, Sen. Rand Paul, a medical doctor, opthamologist, is called a fierce advocate against government overreach. He supports our Constitution. Paul’s denying the Trump spending bill – huge! The bill’s passage will hurt the unwealthy, in favor of the wealthy and raise the national debt significantly, as the tax break for the rich becomes permanent with the bill’s passage.
