The game was there for the taking. Concord carried a 2-0 lead into the last inning, with freshman Abby Rochette three outs away from a shutout in her first varsity start in the circle.
Then, it all unraveled.
A pair of fluke hits by Exeter set the table, then a sharp single and two-base error led to two unearned runs as the Blue Hawks stole a 3-2 victory in their final at-bat on Wednesday.
โThis one hurts,โ said Concord Coach Duke Sawyer, whose young team slipped to 1-3.
The teams traded zeroes on the scoreboard through the first three innings. And while Exeter (1-3) put runners aboard, Rochette coolly worked out of the jams, notching five of her nine strikeouts in the opening innings.
Exeterโs Kate Pigsley (five hits, six strikeouts, one walk) retired the first eight batters before Lauren Mullen broke up the no-hit bid in the third. Then in the fourth, Concord struck.
Caitlyn Shea lined a one-out single to center and scored when Izzy Dunn scorched a double down the third-base line.
โTheyโre hungry. Theyโve been coming through with the bats when we need it,โ Sawyer said of Shea and Dunn, two of his veteran players.
The Tide tacked on one more in the fifth when Emmily Attocknie reached on an error, Mullen sacrificed pinch runner Jill Dusseault to second, then Dusseault took third on a wild pitch and scored on Rochetteโs single to center.
In the top of the seventh, however, Exeter wouldnโt go quietly. Sydney DeVogt, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, reached on a swinging bunt single, then Jalin Marston tapped a slow roller to second with everyone reaching safely.
Of the Blue Hawksโ six singles to that point, only two had left the infield. Keala Eichholz delivered the third. Eichholz hit a hard single up the middle to plate DeVogt, and when the ball skipped past the center fielder, Marston came home with the tying run and Eichholz motored into third.
Rochette struck out the next batter, but a groundout to second sent Eichholz home with the go-ahead run.
โAbby pitched well enough to win,โ Sawyer said of Rochette, who scattered seven hits, struck out nine, walked two and allowed just one earned run. โI think she was a little nervous at first, but she bore down. And Nicole (Cacciola) was a big help behind the plate. The two of them work really well together.โ
Concord put a runner into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but couldnโt get her home.
โFive hits isnโt enough. Weโre not hitting the ball very well,โ Sawyer said.
โWeโve got a tough one on Friday (at Londonderry), but weโll see if we can bounce back.โ
