New Hampshire Hospital has placed Dr. Matthew Masewic on paid administrative leave after the state’s Board of Medicine temporarily suspended his license last week.
The Board of Medicine found that Masewic, who works part-time at Valley Street jail in Manchester, failed to provide inmates with sufficient care. One patient’s untreated ailments resulted in paralysis, another wasn’t given antibiotics and delivered a stillborn baby at the jail, and another patient’s medications were stopped, even after an emergency room trip, the investigation found.
The Board of Medicine temporarily barred Masewic from practicing medicine at any correctional facility for 120 days on April 28, while the investigation continues. Masewic was scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Wednesday. Officials will eventually decide whether to revoke, reinstate or continue the suspension.
Initially, Masewic was allowed to continue working as a senior physician at New Hampshire Hospital in Concord, but was put on paid leave from the state-run psychiatric facility Monday.
“He will remain on leave pending the outcome of the Board of Medicine’s investigation and a quality review of his performance at N.H. Hospital,” said Jake Leon, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, which runs the hospital.
Masewic is paid a $143,000 a year, according to state employee records.
Masewic didn’t break any rules by working for the county and state at the same time. HHS doesn’t have a specific policy regarding secondary jobs, unless they affect a worker’s ability to meet his or her state responsibilities, Leon said.
