A man injured by police last month was shot by two officers on the Farmington Police Department, the attorney general’s office announced.
Sergeant Timothy Seawards and patrol officer Connor Sutherland had responded to a mutual aid call in the neighboring town of Milton on the night of May 27.
When they arrived to Elm Street, near the Maine border, officers found 37-year-old Ryan Cantwell barricaded in his car with “what appeared to be a firearm,” according to the attorney general’s office.
During the interaction, Seawards and Sutherland fired their guns at Cantwell, who is still in the hospital being treated for injuries.
The details are under investigation by the attorney general’s office, which reviews every use of deadly force by law enforcement and almost always rules that they are legally justified in their actions.
Five people have been shot by police in New Hampshire this year, including in Ashland, Milan, Northfield and Raymond. Three of those people have died. Law enforcement used deadly force nine times in 2025, killing three people and injuring six.
